A lady that worked at my husband's place of employment for 20 or so years died in a fire at her home last week. She was sleeping, and sometime during the night her house caught fire. She was found still in her bed.
My husband reminded me that we should always say, "Lord willing, we will do so-and-so a thing." (James 4:15) We never know what tomorrow will hold.
He also asked me how much I have taught the children about fire safety and encouraged me to go over fire safety rules. I have talked to them about not playing with fire, but not what to do in case of fire. So, we went over what to do.
We talked about feeling the door for heat, crawling through thick smoke, and meeting at a pre-chosen location. Then I told them that we would have a fire drill sometime that day. They would be responsible for making sure their buddy made it to the meeting place, and I would time them.
All day, they kept eyeing me and wondering when I would sound the alarm. When I finally did, they rushed out, buddy in hand, to our meeting place. It was heart warming to see them making sure the little ones made it out safely. Our new neighbors were moving in, and I wonder what they thought! Anyway, we had a successful drill, and I hope we never have to use the skills we practiced.
