Storing 25lbs. Sugar and Flour

I stopped using my canisters for storing sugar and flour a while back. It just wasn’t practical for me with as much baking as I do. I was constantly having to refill them, so finally, I just gave up on them and got the sugar and flour, when I needed them, straight from the bags, which I stored in my pantry.
During a visit from a dear friend, she wondered aloud why I continued to buy the 5 pound bags instead of the more economical 25 pound bags. I didn’t really have a good reason except that I hadn’t thought it through and didn’t know where to keep that much flour and sugar.

That was then! This is now….

I keep two of these in my pantry. One is marked “flour” and one is marked “sugar”.
Then, with my mixing bowls, I keep two of these…

One for flour and one for sugar. I refill these out of the big tubs and refill the big tubs when they are low. This “works for me!” Check out more great tips at Rocks in my Dryer.

    GREAT tip! I bought some really LARGE rubbermaid/tupperware/snaploc thingys since my storage space is at a premium in our tiny house, but it is the same idea as yours. I save money-wise by buying these staple items from the bulk bins.

    Great tip! Mine is on brushing hair without the whines (from kids).

  6. This is a neat idea, and I’m wishing I could go out right now and buy some big tubs…but we live in a small condo and have no pantry space for something like that. I guess I could put them under the bed, but somehow that seems weird. :) Thank you for the idea, though – someday when we have a house with a pantry I’ll remember it!

  7. Great idea! We buy a number of things in 25 lb increments (beans, rice, flour and oats) and they are all stored in buckets in the back of our entry closet. It was the only place I could think of to put them where they would be in reach but out of the way – and it is an incentive to keep my closet clean. :-)

  8. Where do you even buy 25lbs of flour and sugar? I’d love to do this… I wonder if Sam’s Club sells them in bags that big.

    Have you seen a real $$ savings buying them in bulk?

  11. This is a great tip! I buy bread flour for my bread machine from Sams Club, it is $5.69 for 25 lbs. It is just as good as Gold Medal. I was spending $4.00 for five lbs at our little local store before this, but I never had a place to store it. I am doing this for sure! Thanks for a great and simple idea.

  12. This is a great idea. I get free 5 gal food-quality containers from the bakery at my local grocery store. If it’s something that need to be airtight I put a gamma seal on it. Definitely worth buying in bulk.

  14. This IS a great idea…I’ve been doing it for years with beans and rice…(slaps forehead)…why didn’t I think of doing it with sugar and flour?
