School House Rock

by Smockity Frocks on September 9, 2008

Do y’all remember watching School House Rock in between the cartoons on Saturday mornings when you were a kid?

Man! I loved those little 3 minute songs, and I still remember them, too.

Innnn-terjections! Show excitement! Or emotion! Generally set apart from a sentence by an exclamation point. Or by a comma when the feelings not as strong. (Cue Geraldo turning into frog.)

See?

Well, guess what! I found them all on You Tube and my kids think they are super groovy.

They like them because of the cute animation and the catchy tunes. I like them because before you know it, they can remember a thing or two about parts of speech or American history or multiplication.

My favorites are the ones about our country’s history. I show them to my children in this order:

No More Kings

The Shot Heard ‘Round the World

The Preamble

Elbow Room

That’s what Works For Me this week. Be sure to check out my most popular educational post, my place value chart. Then, go to Rocks In My Dryer to see what is working for everyone else.

Would you think I’m a nerd if I told you I got the set of dvds with all the Schoolhouse Rock episodes? I love them!

My 6 yr old was by my side when I was checking out your WFMW post and he LOVED the clips. I found out our library has some cds and DVDs of Schoolhouse Rock – so I just ordered them. Thanks for the tip.

I have the DVDs, too… what’s scary, though, is that it was my MOM, not me, that grew up on Schoolhouse Rock. But she raised my sister and I on them, too, and now my stepdaughter watches them! Yay!

Oh good heavens – how can I THANK you?! Your videos kept my not-quite-two year old occupied for a whole 45 minutes!!!!!!!!! Brilliant. I love these! My Mom remembers them, and how they used to sing the catchy songs in school (in the 60′s…) By the time I was in elementary school, Reading Rainbow was all the rage.

I have also passed my love of all things School House Rock on to my kids… In high school, I even used the preamble song when I had to recite it aloud in history class!

Thank you so much for posting that. My kids sat down and watched a few with me and they love it. We have had several of the topics recently in our home school materials and this is going to help reinforce it! Yay! Thanks again!
