I like to let my children help me in the kitchen, and they generally enjoy contributing.
Usually, I will give them the recipe I want made, but occasionally I let them come up with an original recipe. My Madison asked to create a dish last week and it was a big hit!
Everyone loved it, and I was so proud of her creativity! I think letting kids create recipes is a great confidence booster, PLUS it is great practice for real life skills.
Here is what she came up with.
Potatoes Au Gratin with Spinach
- sliced potatoes
- 2 cups milk
- 2 cups shredded cheddar
- canned spinach
- 1/2 tsp. garlic
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- 1/4 cup melted butter
Slice 4-5 medium potatoes. Mix milk with melted butter, salt, pepper, and garlic. Layer potatoes, spinach, and shredded cheddar in a 9 x 13 pan. Pour milk mixture over all, cover with foil, and bake in 450 oven for 30 minutes.

Yum! Her recipe sounds good to me!!
I had to laugh that we were both thinking kids and kitchen this week.
Can’t wait to see what mine come up with recipe-wise once I let ‘em loose!! I think I’ll show them this post for inspiration.
Impressive! A child who voluntarily put spinach in a meal!!
That actually looks really, really good, and now you have me craving some…
Looks great – I had mine make – with help, of course applesauce this morning. WE tweaked the cinnamon and suger since we like things a bit on the tart side. Putting this on my menu plan – perfect for potlucks!
