Rye Molasses Bread

by Smockity Frocks on August 15, 2010

This rye molasses bread is one of our favorite bread recipes. It makes a dark and hearty bread that our whole family loves.

Here are the ingredients you will need.

  • 6 3/4 tsp. yeast (or 3 packets)
  • warm water
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark molasses
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 2 cups rye flour
  • 3 cups all purpose flour

Dissolve the yeast and sugar in 1/2 cup warm water. Let rest until bubbly.

Combine yeast mixture with molasses, salt, oil, and rye flour in a mixer bowl. Beat until smooth.

Add all purpose flour 1 cup at a time, until the dough is smooth and elastic. Let the mixer knead the dough on low setting for 3 minutes.

Remove the dough hook and cover bowl with a damp cloth. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).

Punch down and divide dough into 2 loaves. Place on a greased cookie sheet that has been dusted with corn meal.

Cover and allow to rise again until doubled in size (about an hour).

Bake at 375 for 30 minutes. Enjoy!
