4 Moms Answer Reader Questions

The 4 Moms are answering reader questions once again! Be sure to check out what questions the other moms have pulled out of their inboxes.
Here are a few questions I have recently received:
I would really like to know how you homeschool moms deal with unmotivated learners. I mean kids who don’t seem interested in learning anything.
I’m not going to come right out and admit that I have any experience with unmotivated learners, but if I did have an unmotivated learner, and do keep in mind that this is purely hypothetical, I would tell him that it doesn’t have to be fun, it just has to be done.
I might also give my standard lecture about how I do not especially enjoy changing poopy diapers, but I do it anyway because it needs doing and it is beneficial. Algebra/Spelling/Whathaveyou might fall into this “needs doing and is beneficial” category as well.
I might then end my sermon with the exhortation that I don’t care if it hairlips the governor, the work will be done, and if any more whining is detected, I will double the work in order that the student might appreciate his assignments henceforth.
I mean, if I had any experience with that issue, of course…
I appreciate your honesty in the “Why So Many Children ?” article where you shared your journey of letting go and letting God plan your family. I am a mommy to 3 active boys 2, 4, and 6 and have had that
philosophy for the last 9 years, but constantly question my sanity regarding that matter a couple times per month! So, my question to you is how did/do you find the strength to live out that conviction on a daily basis?
There are some days that I honestly don’t have the strength to live out anything. I get tired and crabby and wonder what in the world I was thinking, just like any normal person might. Because I am a normal person. I can’t do this on my own. I don’t have enough conviction or guts to carry it out. The only thing for me to do is “trust in the Lord with all my heart, lean not on my own understanding, in all my ways submit to HIM, and HE makes my paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 )
I get encouragement from the Bible, my husband, and other moms of many, and I put one foot in front of the other, trusting that God’s is faithful and will give me the strength I need.
I am wondering how to blend spelling, handwriting and grammar all together.
We use “Spelling Wisdom” by Simply Charlotte Mason , which is a system of copying quotes from great literature or great people in history. The student copies the piece for as many days as it takes for him to be comfortable with it, and is then tested on it. For the test, I read it aloud and it must be written correctly, with proper punctuation.
We have also recently begun a pen pal relationship, which I think is an excellent way of incorporating spelling, handwriting, and grammar into a real life skill.
Thanks for joining the 4 Moms our monthly question and answer series! Remember to email us with your questions and check back next time.
