4 Moms Answer Your Questions

Wow. You people are nosey [3].  And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Thanks to many of you, I now have an inbox full of great questions! I’ll be answering some of them here, using some as prompts for entire posts, and answering some privately in emails.

Of course, I’ll be doing that in my spare time, so I should get to all of your questions sometime in July of 2012.

And now for the questions weighing on your minds:

What do you do with babies/toddlers/under Kindergarten crowd while homeschooling the others?

I have written a few suggestions for homeschooling with preschoolers [4], and Preschoolers and Peace [5] is a nifty place to find ideas on what to do with the little rascals.

Here’s where I don’t want to give anyone the impression that just because I have a few ideas or suggestions, the answer is simple. It is just  difficult  to manage little ones and teach big kids at the same time.

I try to keep on keeping on even when we have disruptions. Sticking to a routine and having activities to keep the little ones busy also helps.  When it’s time for playing with the dollhouse in the living room, at least you can be fairly certain no one is trying to baptize the hamsters in the kitchen sink.

Until you turn your back. Then all bets are off.

How do you store/organize children’s clothes, including socks and underwear?

You can see where I have written about storing socks [6] and storing out of season and hand me down clothes [7]. In the summer I encourage kids to wear flip flops or sandals, because I really do hate socks. They are just one more thing to search for when we’re running late or pick up off the kitchen floor when I’m cooking dinner. If you clicked on the sock link, you’ll know that socks and I have a troubled history.

Rough-housing: Allowed in house? Running? Wrestling? Playing soldiers? Yelling? (During winter when no one wants to go outside)

You may or may not want to emulate my style and then phone the psychiatric ward of your local hospital on this one, but I am one of those moms who doesn’t mind roller skating in the house and sliding down the stairs on pillows. That is until I have had it up. To. Here.  And then I send everyone to their rooms to read a book.

I do often encourage my children to play outside if the weather is at all compliant. After lunch, I like to send them out to get some fresh air and tell them to come inside when they are ready for a nap. You’d be surprised how long they’ll stay out there given that directive!

What curriculum do you use?

See my homeschool curriculum choices here [8], and know that I am always tweaking, searching, and adjusting those to suit our needs when they change. Don’t be afraid to change courses if you aren’t happy with the curriculum you have chosen. Also know, though, that no curriculum is perfect.  If you are looking for something that will make homeschooling hassle free, you won’t find it.

Thus ends this edition of  “Ask The 4 Moms”. Thank you so much for sending me your questions!  I hope to answer those that are not in this post sometime in the near future. In the meantime, be sure to see if your question was answered by one of the other moms:
