4 Moms Teach History

This week, The 4 Moms are sharing our strategies for teaching history.
I began my homeschool curriculum journey using The Well-Trained Mind as my curriculum guide. That book encourages parents to teach the history of the world every 4 years.
In other words, in grade 1 the child would study ancient history and by grade 4 he would be to modern history. That schedule would be repeated until the child completed 12th grade. By the end of that time, he would have studied the history of the world 3 times.
We like The Usborne Book of World History , which is recommended in The Well Trained Mind.
What I don’t like is having many different children studying many different periods of history. That gives Mama a headache.
For that reason, I like to group my children together in age clusters to go through the book, reading 2 pages each day together, and then going their separate ways to complete the summary or drawing of what they have read.
In addition to reading through the Book of World History, we systematically go through a list of biographies of great men and women of each time period.
I also peruse the Sonlight history book list and see what I can get from there at reasonable prices on Amazon or Ebay or used book sources.
With my 2 oldest children, I confess to getting nervous about what they may have been missing out on, and I put them each in a classic world history text book. I also have American history text books that they will be going through later.
We schedule 30 minutes/day for history, and we watch a lot of The History Channel and have used a time line as supplemental activities.
Be sure to check out how the rest of my 4 Moms team teaches history!
