The 4 Moms are sharing naptime management tips. Be sure to see what the rest of my team has to say about naptime:
As for The Smockity Family, we love our naptimes!
Everyone goes to their beds, or couches, or designated quiet places for one solid hour of absolutely no talking or noise. I don’t care whether they go to sleep, but heads must be on pillows and there must be no noise.
There is so much noise and activity in our family all day long, that an hour of quiet rest is a welcome break for all of us.
Some of the activities I allow during naptime are:
- reading
- writing in journals
- drawing
- listening to iPods (with ear buds)
- listening to books on CD
Some of the activities I don’t allow because of mess or noise:
- coloring (I hate cleaning up scads of broken crayons out of beds!)
- cutting/gluing
- puzzles (Ditto with puzzle pieces)
- train tracks
- battery operated toys
I used to use a timer to let everyone know when an hour was up, until I figured out this ingenious naptime tip!
Here are some of the books and CD’s we like for pre-naptime or bedtime readings:
- A Child’s Garden of Songs: The Poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson in Song
- The Little House books
- Goodnight Moon
- The Runaway Bunny
- The Beginner’s Bible
Now we would like to know what books you recommend for naptime or bedtime reading! Link up to share your favorites. Here’s how:
1. You must link to a specific relevant post on your blog.
2. Your post must include a link to at least one of the 4 Moms.
3. Your blog post must be completely family friendly.
If your link is deleted, you probably didn’t follow one of the rules above. Please feel free to add your link again once you have fixed the problem. If you don’t know why your link was deleted, please ask.

We too have book time/ nap time regularly w/o fail every day after lunch – it’s a life saver and when the kids have always been in the habit, they don’t know any differently!
I have a houseful of bookworms, so it works out well to only allow books. I consider this independent reading time to be an important part of their learning!
None of our children nap any more but maybe on occasion. Oh how I miss that!!! We do have a “quiet time” though. We all take turns reading. One of my favs to read is “The Hungry Thing” … a book I loved when I was a child.
I was interested where you said your kids go to bed, or other designated nap time. My daughter is almost 1 year old and she will sleep in her crib just fine at night, but doesn’t nap well there during the day. If I can get her to sleep in the crib, she wakes 30 min later. She will, however, fall happily asleep for naps in her car seat (in the living room, not while I’m driving around) and sometimes sleep for hours. Is it okay if for her naps aren’t necessarily bed? Should I work to change this…if so how?
I love reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. My daughter likes it, too, but I think I like it more. It’s just fun to read out loud! I try to find slower-paced or softer-toned books for naptime and bedtime, but it’s hard. So many kids books are Fun! and Loud! and Not Helpful for the Winding Down!
Hey Connie –
Thanks for the Link up! We love many books but The Night Night Book by Marianne Richmond is our new favorite. I actually have a giveaway going for it if you want to enter : )
