“Mom, I’m Bored” Activity Jar

My friend The Happy Housewife is super nice. She is one of those types you know would have your back if you ever got into a fist fight at a library book sale.

Not that I would ever get into a fist fight. I’m just sayin’ Happy would be all over it if I did.

She’s also a much nicer mom than I am because she made up these ultra nifty “Mom, I’m bored” activity cards for her kids instead of handing them a toilet brush, which is always my policy when I hear those words.

Funny, my kids don’t say that much, but if yours do, use card stock and the pdf Happy provides with 85 activities,¬†and make yourself an activity jar!

  1. Love it. I think I am more like you. I tell them to get a box and go pack their toys up for the orphans. They still fuss a bit, but eventually find something to do. I don’t remember ever telling my parents I was bored. We used our imaginations to find something to do.

You ae so RIGHT! I am in my early 50′s, I don’t remember saying I am bored and my mom stoping to think “well Liz, let’s think of something” we went back outside till we found something to do. Safer times though! This sumer I have a 12 yr old who broke 2 bones in his back and 2 in his wrist at last dat “Spring Fling” at 6th grade center. He got FLUNG alright! They found it appropriate to have not 1 but 2 mechanical bulls at event..no parent release form or notification forms. Needless to say, what do you do to keep the boy busy and trying to have fun for next 6-8 weeks? He is in an upper torso brace, back and front and has a cast on is left arm! No water cast either! Not that he could do much in a pool…an ideas!?

  2. You know this would work for me. I like to create art quilts, journal quilts and who knows what. I get bored and tend to spend too much time playing computer games instead of what God created me to do. I am going to make a jar for me today with ideas I have for art quilts. Thanks!
Create, inspire, encourage. Love ya Bren

  3. I don’t hear “I’m bored” very often either. I tend to do like you do and give them a job or find more school work for them. I’ve also found that simple planning and assigning them to various activities through the day means that when they are free to choose what they want to do they appreciate that freedom all the more.

I just found this post and it made me giggle. On the rare occasion we told my mom we were board she made us clean the bathroom. I remember doing it once. Now I use the same response on my own children. They tried it once and then found great FUN cleaning the bathroom all together. (It is a discouragement, right?) They did get the point. ;-)
