Have y’all seen the “Elf on the Shelf” Christmas phenomenon that is sweeping the nation?
Well, okay, I don’t know about the nation, but it is sweeping Facebook and Pinterest and that is where I get most of my news. I know. It’s like I have my finger on the very pulse of society, isn’t it?
In light of that, this next announcement is amazing:
WE HAVE BEEN DOING THE ELF ON THE SHELF FOR THE LAST 14 YEARS!
For once, I am ahead of the fashion trend!
Me! The girl from the seventies who swore she would never wear bell-bottoms. The girl who was the last one to catch on to the leg-warmers over the jeans in the eighties. The girl from the nineties who… STARTED DOING ELF ON THE SHELF BEFORE EVERYONE ELSE!!!
Here is our elf, “Delbert”. As you can see by his worn clothing, he has been around a while longer than those new upstarts that just began showing up on the scene.
Delbert is supposed to watch the kids, and each night he goes to the North Pole to report to Santa on their behavior. We normally call this tattling, but apparently tattling and bribery are encouraged during the Christmas season, so we go with it.
It turns out some people are slacker moms (ahem) and forget to move the elf for days on end, but since our kids are onto the whole Santa secret, they just remind me in that gentle way children have, “MOM! You forgot to move Delbert AGAINNNNNN???”
