Elf on the Shelf

Have y’all seen the “Elf on the Shelf” Christmas phenomenon that is sweeping the nation?

Well, okay, I don’t know about the nation, but it is sweeping Facebook and Pinterest and that is where I get most of my news. I know. It’s like I have my finger on the very pulse of society, isn’t it?

In light of that, this next announcement is amazing:

WE HAVE BEEN DOING THE ELF ON THE SHELF FOR THE LAST 14 YEARS!

For once, I am ahead of the fashion trend!

Me! The girl from the seventies who swore she would never wear bell-bottoms. The girl who was the last one to catch on to the leg-warmers over the jeans in the eighties. The girl from the nineties who…  STARTED DOING ELF ON THE SHELF BEFORE EVERYONE ELSE!!!

Here is our elf, “Delbert”. As you can see by his worn clothing, he has been around a while longer than those new upstarts that just began showing up on the scene.

Delbert is supposed to watch the kids, and each night he goes to the North Pole to report to Santa on their behavior. We normally call this tattling, but apparently tattling and bribery are encouraged during the Christmas season, so we go with it.

It turns out some people are slacker moms (ahem) and forget to move the elf for days on end, but since our kids are onto the whole Santa secret, they just remind me in that gentle way children have, “MOM! You forgot to move Delbert AGAINNNNNN???”

Do you do “Elf on the Shelf”?

  1. I remember your elf from way back when! I think he is cute and he has an easy job at your house because your kids are very well behaved. Merry Christmas:)

  2. We LOVE our Elf on the Shelf!! This is our 3rd year with him! This year he has been pretty naughty and up to no good…trying to teach the kids to be naughty! We are still Santa believers since our oldest is 7…we have had so much fun with this with the kids. One night Twinkle our Elf toilet papered the bathroom…last night he decorated our xmas tree with the kids underpants!! And he gets into the candy!! Most nights he just moves from place to place though…I am SO HAPPY tonight is our last night with him..cause we have a small house and its rather hard to find new spots!!

  3. Aha! I wondered what all the “Elf on the Shelf” stuff was about! Thanks for the explanation. I wonder if we can get them over here?

  4. I have an elf, old, a bit warn that I put out every single year since I was a small child and my grandma brought him to us kids. I guess I was around 7 or so. I just never realized how old the little fella is until your article. I’m now 55 and I still bring that elf out. A little bit tacky, sure, but what’s christmas without him?
This little elf is more about memories from long ago, and new memories in the making in our family.

  5. I think the Elf they sell nowadays is SOOO creepy! Seriously, it’ll scare the devil out of your child!

  6. Since my children are 32 and 27 I do not do Elf on the shelf, but I did read it to my kids 30

    • Sorry -hit the wrong key (way too much coffee!) Anyway, as I was saying, I did read the book to my kids close to 30 years ago, but I don’t think they had the figure back then (but I don’t know that for a fact). Anyway, now that my youngest daughter is expecting our first grandbaby I just might have to jump in on the craze in a couple of years!

  7. Our Elf is called Wilf and he’s had all sorts of fun this year….. There was the snow ball fight with cotton puffs in the lounge, or when we went on a day trip and came home and he’d dyed the milk blue, or when he baked cookies and left a terrible floury mess but a delicious batch of cookies, my sons favourite was when he got the shepherds and the sheep from our nativity tableaux (we have a few – blush) doing the conga……

  8. Dawn Purdom says:

Hi, Connie, I love your elf and actually had never heard of an Elf on a Shelf before (gasp)!! So I thought I’d get one for next year, but when I looked on Ebay, I couldn’t find any elf as cute as yours. Does anyone have a suggestion for a poseable and cute elf like Connie’s? Blessings, Dawn
