Favorite Read Aloud Books

My children, even the teenagers, who are excellent and voracious readers themselves, love to sit around and draw, knit, or just listen while I read our favorite chapter books aloud.
Here are a few of the books we all love:
- Little Britches: Father and I Were Ranchers
– This has been said to be the “Little House for boys”. It is similar to the Laura Ingalls Wilder books in that is is an autobiographical tale of a boy living in “olden days”. This book has a few mild cuss words, which I skipped right over during the read alouds. Be prepared to cry your eyes out at the next to the last chapter.
- Man of the Family
– This is the next book in the series after “Little Britches”, which I had to run right out to the library and get the minute I finished the first one. It’s just as good! Ralph learns many lessons about honesty, hard work, and charity.
- Understood Betsy
– Darling story of a sweet, but slightly spoiled little girl who has heard of children who are forced to do dreadful things called “chores”. She soon finds out that they are not so dreadful when she goes to live with 2 aunts who expect her to contribute to the household.
Here are some more of our favorite read alouds.
What are some of your favorite books to read aloud?
– Classic C.S. Lewis. Of course, we had to read all the rest of the Narnia series as well.
– From the Wizard of Oz series.

Ours girls are still pretty young (all 4 and under) so Peter Rabbit and other Beatrix Potter books are a success here and I read them over and over again
Other books like “Are you my mother” or “Green eggs and ham” are fun books to read
We have some bible story book, and their FAV is Noah, for some reason they are fascinated with the ark, animal and of course the rainbow
My boys and I LOVED Charlotte’s Web, Stuart Little, and the A. A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh books/poetry. Right now we are working our way through the Narnia books.
We have a 4 month old, but my husband and I love to read aloud (even before we had a baby!). My favorite book is “Just So Stories” by Rudyard Kipling. They are cute, short stories about several different animals. There are a few that reference magic (which we usually skip), but otherwise they are great for all ages!
My husband’s favorite book is “Watership Down” by Richard Adams. It’s a great book about a group of rabbits that have to leave their home and encounter lots of problems along the way. It might be a bit much for younger reader, but older elementary kids would probably really like it.

Ramona Quimby series!
One of my elementary teachers in the ’60s (I was a genius and started school as a fetus) read us Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books. Because they’re so old, I was surprised to see the books in my children’s school library in the ’90s. I read them to my girls and was surprised that they “got” the hilarious humor. Her wacky ways of dealing with kids’ behavior issues are a real conversation starter!
We are reading the Melendy series by Elizabeth Enright right now which starts with “The Saturdays” then “The four story mistake,” “Then there were five,” and last “A spiderweb for two.” These books are just enchanting, the children are wholesome and fun. They treat their siblings with kindness and only poke fun at each other in a loving way. They come up with the most wonderful adventures and I whole heartedly agree with Ms. Enrights’ comment in the forward about the Melendy children having the kind of adventures she dreamed she might like to have had herself as a child.
A couple shorter books we adored are “For the birds” about the life of Robert Peterson of “Petersons’ guides” and “To Fly” about the Wright Bros. as boys and their quest for flight. My children loved the fun poem at the begining of the book so much they memorized it to recite for dad at dinner time.
