Homemade Citrus Vinegar Cleaner {How To}

Do you follow Smockity Frocks on Pinterest? A while back, while I was surfing Pinterest, I saw a homemade vinegar citrus cleaning spray and I thought I had pinned it so I could go back later and take a closer look. Only later I never could find what I had seen before. So I decided to experiment with making my own.

It turns out that my children hate the smell of equal amounts plain vinegar and water in a spray bottle. I tried adding a small amount of dish soap, but they still didn’t like the smell.

That’s why I was anxious to try this homemade citrus vinegar cleaner.

It is super simple and only requires 2 ingredients, plus the clean citrus scent is much nicer than plain vinegar!

Homemade Citrus Vinegar Cleaner

  • Citrus peels (I used grapefruit.)
  • White vinegar
  • Mason jar

1. Quarter and peel 2-3 citrus fruits, making sure to remove all pulp from peels.

2. Place the peels in a quart Mason jar and fill with white vinegar. (In the photo above, I had already used some of the vinegar mixture in a spray bottle.)

3. Allow the mixture to “steep” for 3-4 weeks. (The longer you let it steep, the stronger the citrus scent will be.)

4. Fill half an empty spray bottle with the vinegar mixture.

5. Fill the rest of the bottle with water.

This homemade cleaner has a very pleasant scent, plus the cleaning power of vinegar and citrus oil!

  1. I have done this exact same thing! Smells great (as great as viegar CAN smell ;) and cleans wonderfully! And I made so much this past winter I think I have about four quarts of various citrus vinegar ready to go for the year. It works with all citrus – orange, tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, etc.

  2. This sounds wonderful. I will be making one of these up tomorrow morning.

  3. Super duper coolness! I’m going to try it myself.

  4. You’re right – it’s WAY better than just plain vinegar. I try to make several batches of this every winter when oranges are on sale. :-)
I love that it works with whatever citrus fruit you have laying around.

  5. Jeri @ Texas Piglets says:

we just made the switch to vinegar. now I have something to do with all of the orange peels! Thanks

  6. I wonder if any you, or any of your followers that have done this have tried topping off the jar after the first batch is used? I just happen to have oranges in my fridge, I know what I am making soon!

  7. Since some of us came into parenting with a severe “mothering” handicap and don’t know the first thing about anything artsy, cutsie, fluffy, cuddly, or do-it-yourself….. what in the world would you clean with vinegar???

  8. Melissa,

The better question is what DON’T you clean with vinegar. And the answer would be electronics and wood that has not been sealed.

Anything else is fair game. Just make sure you use newspaper when cleaning mirrors and windows.

  9. Sounds wonderful! I don’t particularly care for the smell of my vinegar and water cleaner either. But citrus? Now that would make it fun to clean!

  10. I read the link on uses for vinegar and didn’t see the one that got me started. in the Laundry. I use vinegar every time I get something new. Vinegar sets the color so that there is less bleeding onto other items in the wash.

  11. I have a jar like yours sitting on my counter now! Can’t wait to see how it smells in a few weeks. Oh, and I’m posting this to Pinterest. Such a great idea!
