The 4 Moms of 35+ Kids are discussing how to get children to work hard with a good attitude.
I have discussed before how we teach our children to do chores, and why we believe it is important to do that.
Today's topic is a bit more complex than just a chore list or chore management, because it involves working with a good attitude. You see, it's easy to get one of the two right.
We can get the chores done. We can have good attitudes. But getting the chores done with good attitudes? Well, that's a little like getting to church on time with everyone wearing church shoes.
Sort of an elusive beast.
It can be done, but it takes planning, diligence, and consistency to pull it off.
Here are some ways we encourage working hard with a good attitude.
- Play some lively music during chore time. We prefer Johnny Cash. Really loud Johnny Cash. But whatever floats your boat will work.
- Everyone works together. When the children can look around and see that all hands are on deck, they can see that they are part of a team effort. This makes a big job seem doable.
- Be a good example of a good attitude. If I hear grumbling while chores are being done, I usually start singing at the top of my lungs. They usually join in or beg me to stop. Either way, it's a win because the work gets done with laughter and song!
- Offer incentives. Okay, some people call this bribing, but I'm okay with that. We go to Happy Hour at Sonic after our big Saturday cleanup each week , and the winner of the cleaning competition gets a Route 44 drink of their choice! (I even have grading sheets. You can download them at that link.) You should see those kids clean!
