Some time last year, I told my husband I had reached the bottom of my well of words, and I didn’t have any more original thoughts bouncing around in my noggin to type out here on the ol’ blog. I was dry. I was ready to pull the plug.
He promptly told me to snap out of it and get to typing. He also suggested that maybe attending some blogging conferences would load me up on inspiration and give me a second wind.
So I bought a ticket to Blissdom , which was being held in my own area, and planned to attend.
Honestly, I wasn’t really even looking forward to going. It’s a lot of work to make sure 9 humans can survive without me. I’m pretty bossy, and it’s hard to imagine that they can get along without that. But I fixed my hair and packed my stuff, and away I went.
The hotel, The Gaylord Texan, was GORGEOUS.
(I know what you’re thinking, “I thought she fixed her hair…” It was raining, OKAY?)
I met up with some of my very first and very favorite blogging friends to have dinner the first night. Joy , Toni , Lynn , Amy , Monica , and Jen were a huge part of my support system when my husband was suddenly laid off a couple of years ago. They helped me turn my blog into a business, bought my kids flip flops, sent diapers in the mail every month, prayed for me, called me, supplied us with groceries, and so much more. If you don’t think internet friends are “real” friends, you don’t know my friends.
I roomed with Nony, from A Slob Comes Clean , who took full advantage of my propensity to laugh at anything and everything. We’re both a little cray-cray, and it didn’t help matters that she is hysterical, so I was in “ugly laugh” mode much of the time.
(Please, enjoy this poor quality video of us putting sound to the cray-cray.)
I got to listen to a very inspiring speech from Susan Cain, author of “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking “. I was able to meet her afterwards and tell her that her book had changed the way I parent. She was just as sweet as she could be! So genuine and humble.
(Christian side hug)
Meeting Jon Acuff and listening to his keynote address was the highlight of Blissdom for me! He absolutely inspired me to focus on my goals, stop listening to the critical voices in my head (and from real people), and “punch fear in the face” to make my dreams come true.
Overall, Blissdom was a big blessing to me. I came away with new passion, new goals, and a new determination to use the gifts God has given me to bless others.
Plus, I got a bunch of free stuff and had a barrel of laughs. So, I’d say my husband had the right idea.
