Using the Gifts God Has Given You

If God has gifted you to write, write! You don’t need a book deal to have an impact with your writing. The same is true with other dreams … sing, create, teach, paint, develop — use your gifts right where you are to bless others — Lysa TerKeurst
I had been thinking about this very concept lately, when a friend of mine posted the above quote on her Facebook status.
Sometimes when we see others that are good at something we are not good at, it can be tempting to become jealous, or even depressed. “Why can’t I be a better speaker? Why am I no good at photography? Why is it so hard for me to relate to children/teens/widows? She is so good at teaching Sunday school. Why can’t I be more like her?”
I think this is a snare from Satan, who doesn’t want us to use the gifts that God has given us. Satan wants us to be so busy focusing on what gifts we don‘t have, that we don’t use the gifts we do have.
The scriptures tell us:
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord…For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body…Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it. (1 Corinthians 12)
This is good news! We don’t have to have the same strengths as anyone else. We can still be part of Christ’s body with unique gifts.
I don’t need to feel depressed because I can not participate in the mission trips to Cambodia that our church organizes. My mission field is in my own home. I am using my gifts right where I am.
Conversely, if you are an “empty nester” you can use your gifts in Cambodia, if you feel called to do that. And you can do that with the confidence that your gifts may not look the same as the gifts of any of your friends.
We see again:
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ…from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love. (Ephesians 4)
We are to use our gifts for the building up of Christ’s church in love as a unified body. Unified in love, not unified by talents and strengths that look the same.
If you are a stay at home mom, use your gifts to bless your family. If you work downtown and have close contact with the homeless, use your gifts to bless them for the purpose of building up the church.
Use the gifts God has given you, right where you are, without regrets that you do not have the same gifts you see around you.
