Talk to Your Kids About Alcohol Use

Did you know April 21st is the national day to talk with your teens about alcohol? I had no idea until I participated in a webinar hosted by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.

I learned some shocking facts during the webinar that I never would have guessed.

  • 1 in 3 eighth graders has tried alcohol.
  • 3 in 4 teens try alcohol before high school graduation.
  • 1 in 3 teen deaths is alcohol related.
  • Teen alcohol use kills approximately 6000 a year.

I also saw a graph that showed the teens who had discussed alcohol with their parents were far less likely to use it.

Our family doesn’t drink, so I figured there was really no urgent need to talk with my teens about alcohol, but after seeing these numbers, I used the first opportunity I found to discuss it.

The very next day after the webinar, I had the kids turn to Proverbs and we read, “Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler, whoever is led astray by them is not wise,” and “Do not join those who drink too much wine...”

They know it is illegal for anyone under 21 to consume alcohol, and we talked about how everyone makes mistakes, but some mistakes are so severe that there is no making amends for them. We discussed the teen in police custody in our community because he attended a party, got drunk, and drove his friend to his death in an accident only a mile or so from the party. I told them about a family which had 4 of the 5 members killed this week because of a drunk driver [3]. They were visibly upset by how much damage a single foolish act can cause.

Be sure your children know how foolishness with alcohol can ruin lives. Talk to them about why the legal drinking age is 21 [4] and why it is important to obey that law.

You can help spread the word about the importance of talking to your kids about alcohol [5].

April 21 is PowerTalk 21 Day – the national day for parents to talk with their teens about alcohol. Research shows parents are the biggest influence on teens’ decisions about alcohol. For more information, visit madd.org/powerofparents [6]
