Letting Kids in the Kitchen

Letting Kids in the Kitchen

Letting kids in the kitchen isn’t the quickest or easiest way to get dinner served, but it’s a great way to build relationships and confidence in your budding home manager.

My 12 year old asked me this week if she could make dinner all by herself. She declared that she would like to make chicken pot pie, and since we had all the ingredients, I said, “Why not?!”

She did everything, from putting a whole chicken in a pot to boil, chopping the onion and garlic, mixing the chicken, canned veggies, and cream soup together, and even making our favorite (and super simple) homemade pie crust!

She ended up not having quite enough pie crust, but she was still very proud of her finished product.

We all loved her homemade, kid-made chicken pot pie, and by the time everyone went back for seconds, there wasn’t a drop left!

Letting kids in the kitchen gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment in something that is tangible and almost immediate.

  1. I have the desire to have my kids cooking, but I suffer from enjoying my time alone in the kitchen. Now that I have a 12 yr old and an 8 yr old I need to make teaching them to cook a bigger priority!

This weekend we are having a few families over for my son’s fifth birthday. With my 2 crockpots and another borrowed from a friend, we are doing hot appetizers to go along with store bought pizza (it’s a birthday treat-usually it’s homemade). My 11 yo daughter has requested to help. She will make crock pot taco dip and 2 cold dips-she want to help so we decided in things she can make. My friend’s 10 to son is their family baker. I was watching her 4 boys. This lovely boy spent 2 hours discussing food with me. He went home with recipes because as he said “cookies are just too easy”. He asked if he could bring a dessert to the party. I said certainly-any willing participants are welcome
