Letting Kids in the Kitchen

Letting Kids in the Kitchen

Letting kids in the kitchen isn't the quickest or easiest way to get dinner served, but it's a great way to build relationships and confidence in your budding home manager.

My 12 year old asked me this week if she could make dinner all by herself. She declared that she would like to make chicken pot pie, and since we had all the ingredients, I said, "Why not?!"

She did everything, from putting a whole chicken in a pot to boil, chopping the onion and garlic, mixing the chicken, canned veggies, and cream soup together, and even making our favorite (and super simple) homemade pie crust [2]!

She ended up not having quite enough pie crust, but she was still very proud of her finished product.

We all loved her homemade, kid-made chicken pot pie, and by the time everyone went back for seconds, there wasn't a drop left!

Letting kids in the kitchen gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment in something that is tangible and almost immediate.
