Getting the Kids Involved in Thanksgiving

My kids love to be involved in holiday preparations. Since Thanksgiving dinner is usually pretty labor intensive, I like to put my kids to work preparing decorations for the big day. This allows them to be an important part of the celebration, just not in the kitchen where I am busy baking, roasting, mashing, and browning.

So, if your kids are like mine, here are some kid friendly Thanksgiving crafts I rounded up from Pinterest they will love. (This has been pinned 25,000+ times! Apparently you people like these as much as I do!)

And in case you need it, here is my “Thanksgiving Dinner for Beginners” post, which includes tips I have learned from my 27 Thanksgivings as Mrs. Hughes, including my secret for roasting a moist, delicious turkey every time.

What are your best Thanksgiving tips?

  2. I do as much as I can ahead of time. And that always depends on if I’m hosting friends and family, attending Thanksgiving someone else is hosting, or if I’m just hosting the 10 of us.

I make rolls usually 3 weeks in advance and freeze.
Pumpkin rolls in the freezer usually a week in advance.
    Cheesecake 2 days in advance.
Pumpkin pie one day in advance. Stuffing one day in advance.
And I make my hubby do the turkey. :P
    Everything else on Thanksgiving morning.

I like to have kid activities thought of in advance whether or not we have additional company. And we always have a veggie tray out for snacking while all the delicious smells permeate the air while we get ready.

  3. I do like to get my kids involved with the food prep, but not on Thanksgiving Day.
I make my bread a few weeks ahead of time and freeze it; they help me make that. The day before Thanksgiving we make the desserts, jello and turkey, and they help me with that too.
I also like to make my mashed potatoes ahead, freeze them, and reheat in the crockpot.
